Code of Practice

As a Code of Practice compliant Instructor I maintain the following standards:

I will avoid improper language, suggestions or physical contact with students.

I will take all reasonable care, skill and diligence in instructing students in all aspects of traffic, driver education, taking account of individual needs and ensuring the safety of students and to gain entrance onto the Register of Approved Driving Instructors.

I will not discuss information disclosed by any students during training, with any other party, except where under obligation by law; and not to discuss the students progress or driving standard with any other party, except for normal consultation within the training session.

I will maintain proper standards of personal hygiene and dress.

I will ensure any vehicle driven or used for training is maintained in good mechanical order and condition, is properly insured, taxed, and where appropriate, certified as roadworthy; and that all reasonable care is taken to keep it clean and tidy.

I will ensure that professional driving tuition is carried out only within the terms of the law; with particular reference to driver licensing and provision of a professional service.

Whilst maintaining my rights to decide against the provision of tuition I will not do so should it contravene legislation with regard to discrimination.

First things first

Before even getting into a driving seat you can start learning to drive as a passenger by looking at what is going on around you.

Look out for traffic signs and markings - do you know what they all mean?

Think about speed and distance - how close is the car in front? Is there enough time for the driver to stop? Check out stopping distances in the Highway Code.

Look out for other road users, especially pedestrians and children - can you tell what they're about to do?

Apply for a provisional licence by completing the application form (D1) available from most post offices. Send it with the fee and passport sized photograph to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AD. Or online.
